How to reduce dark circles under the eyes

Fed up of people telling you how tired you look? We understand. It’s a common beauty bugbear. No matter how much make-up you apply, it can be difficult to conceal puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. So why not stop trying to hide the problem and solve it instead? Here we explore a number of ways to reduce dark circles and get fresher, brighter-looking eyes.

    1. Non-surgical under eye treatment at 23MD

Dark circles often appear due to a lack of volume under the eyes in the tear trough. As we age, the skin in this area can become thin and translucent and the veins beneath become more visible – creating a dark shadow.

One option, therefore, is to restore this lost volume using non-surgical under eye treatments. A range of injectables – including anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, and skin boosters – can be used to successfully re-plump the area and push the skin up and away from the blood vessels underneath.

Here at 23MD, we often use a combination of these to achieve the best results. Every client is unique and we will create the best under eye treatment to meet your specific needs.

    2. Home remedies to reduce dark circles

    Cucumber slices

This is a tried-and-tested under eye treatment, which is both economical and effective. All you need is a couple of cold cucumber slices. Lie on your back, place one slice over each closed eyelid and rest for 10 minutes. The cold temperature will cause blood vessels below the skin to constrict, successfully reducing any swelling and brightening the eyes. Nutrients and antioxidants in the cucumber will also soak into the skin and help to reduce inflammation further.

    Sleep

Contrary to popular belief, lack of sleep does not cause dark circles under the eyes – but it does make them worse. Extra blood gathers in the veins below the eyelid and this can make the existing shadow more apparent. That’s why it’s important to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Give yourself enough time to have sufficient rest and avoid anything that will disrupt your natural sleep cycle (e.g. watching TV or using your mobile phone before going to bed). To minimise puffiness, it can also help to sleep on your back, with your head slightly elevated.

    Diet

There are no quick dietary fixes to reduce dark circles. But, over time, simple changes to what you eat and drink can help to reduce swelling and improve the appearance of the tear trough. For example, you should try to eat fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein as much as possible – all of which are nutritious and have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. At the same, avoid foods that are high in salt (as these encourage water retention). It’s also a good idea to cut down your caffeine and alcohol intake and be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

    UV protection

Sun exposure can exacerbate dark circles under the eyes. Therefore, one easy way to reduce their appearance is to wear sunglasses and invest in sunscreen with a broad-spectrum SPF. This should be applied all the way up to the lash line and regularly re-applied to ensure maximum protection. Alternatively, if you wear make-up on a day-to-day basis, choose products – including foundations and under eye concealers – that are specifically designed to protect against UV rays.
